Description: The Black Russian Terrier is a large to massive dog who's black hair has a distinctive "fall" and a "beard" on their head. The Black Russian Terrier needs to be part of the family as this is a breed that will seek intense contact with humans. The Black Russian Terrier wants to please their owner, so will try anything you ask them! The Black Russian Terrier is considered a jack of all trades of dog-dom. Able to do almost anything: protection, herding, skijoring, obedience, tracking, sled dog, agility and show dog.

Height: Black Russian Terrier males 27 - 29 , Black Russian Terrier females 26 - 28.
Weight: 85 to 140 lbs.

Coat: Two to four inches, coarse, dense, weatherproof, wiry and bristly but close lying wavy.

Temperament: The Black Russian Terrier is brave, observant, intelligent, stubborn.
With Children: Usually. Most find children fascinating.
With Pets: In the family. Some do not like non-family dogs.

Care and Exercise: Coat care should consist of brushing a minimum of 30 minutes/week. The Black Russian Terrier is a low shedding breed. Recommended to see a groomer every 6 weeks. Exercise is important to the Black Russian Terrier and should consist of long walks, room to romp and play. The Black Russian Terrier enjoys water and snow.
Training: Training and socialization are very important. Easy to housebreak, the Black Russian Terrier also does need to be trained to accept the leash. The Black Russian Terrier enjoys training and has a desire to please their master.
Learning Rate: Quick learner, but slow to mature. Good memory.

Activity: Low in house, high outside or in play areas.
Living Environment: Does NOT do well in a kennel. Must live in the
household. For a large dog, they make good pets in an apartment, if you spend time with them.

Health Issues: Hip and elbow problems can be seen.

History: Developed by the government kennels as a military working dog just after World War II, the Black Russian Terrier ancestors include the Giant Schnauzer who was crossed with the Airedale, Rottweiler and a local dog called the Moscow Retriever. Although rare, they have been embraced by the public and can be found in small number in European and Scandinavian dog shows.
