Description: The English Setter is one of the oldest breeds of gun dogs and has been a treasured bird retriever for the last four hundred years. The English Setter is a large graceful dog with a lively sprit who will have unconditional devotion to their whole family. The English Setter thrives on human companionship or with other dogs. Newborn puppies are born white and after the first week begin to change in color.

Height: 24 - 27 inches
Weight: 56 - 66 lbs.

Colors: Black and white, orange and white, lemon and white, liver and white or tricolored, those without heavy patches of color but flecked all over are preferred.
Coat: Short, straight and dense.

Temperament: The English Setter is responsive, friendly
With Children: Yes, but may be too exuberant for small children.
With Pets: Yes, good rapport.
Special Skills: Field sports dog and family pet.

Care and Exercise: Daily brushing of their silky coat. Extra grooming is needed when the English Setter sheds. Bathe or dry shampoo when necessary. Trim hair on feet and tail, check ears for any signs of infection. The English Setter requires long daily walks or free space to run. Good companion to run along side a bicycle. Feeds two or three small meals a day as they are prone to bloating.
Training: Consistent training and strenuous exercise is needed for a good-natured dog. They are easy to train but do have a mind of their own.

Living Environment: A home with a fenced yard is essential as the English Setter has a tendency to wander. Best in a home with affectionate owners who will take time to give them tasks such as hunting, agility work or tracking.

History: Mentioned in European literature in the 14th century the English Setter has been a registered breed by the Kennel Club in London since 1873. Descended from a variety of Spanish spaniels and pointers, they have also been known as the Laerack Setter.
